SIX DAYS IN JUNE: How Israel Won the 1967 Arab-Israeli War. by Eric Hammel. Hammel decisively disproves the enduring myth that Israel's stunning 1967 victory was a "miracel" or a "fluke". He explains how, by necessity and in secret, a tiny Third-World nation developed a First-World military force that has become the envy of all nations of the world. Drawing on scores of gripping first-person accounts, this superb work seamlessly meshes classic military history with the human drama of Israel's finest hour.
EXCERPT: "As soon as the Egyptian tanks appeared, the gunner of Captain Amos's Patton fired at the lead T-34, which erupted in flames. At the same instant, another t-34 fired an 85mm round into a halftrack full of paratroopers. Amos, whose tank was right next to the stricken halftrack, spotted the second T-34. His tank and the T-34 fired at one another in the same instant. Both tanks scored direct hits, and both were set aflame. Amos and his crewmen all leaped out of the burning Patton, but the T-34 crew did not. Amos's clothing was on fire, but he rolled around in the dirt and doused the flames. Then he climbed aboard another Patton and resumed the battle."
