USS PHILIPPINE SEA (CV-47). Phil Sea's baptism in combat came in 1950 while operating in terrible winter weather, as she launched Corsairs to assist the 1st Marine Division in its epic pullout from Chosin Reservoir.
USS PHILIPPINE SEA (CV-47). The aircraft carrier Philippine Sea was launched too late to participate in WWII campaigns, but she became a vital asset to the US Navy for the next 26 years. This special COMMEMORATIVE SHIP HISTORY "coffee table" size book is filled with great stories and memories of the ship, including many action photos. An interesting 1947 mission involved transporting an Antarctic Expedition led by RADM Byrd. Approximately 660 miles from "Little America," Byrd and his men were launched from the Phil Sea's deck in R4D's (DC-3's!), an aviation event worthy of note.
