BY TANK INTO NORMANDY. British tankers and U.S. Sherman tanks in combat from the Battle for Normandy to victory across the Rhine in April 1945. Close encounters with Nazi tanks and anti-tank forces
BY TANK INTO NORMANDY. British tankers of the Nottinghamshire Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry in the Battle for Normandy. Armored. Second Lt Stuart Hills, who in 1944 was a tank commander at the tender age of only 20, launched his Sherman tank from an LCT on June 6 and watched it sink beneath him. Arriving a day later by rubber dinghy, he was assigned a new tank and entered into the battles for the Normandy bocage. In his story, he spearheads into a fiercely held enemy territory where every gain had a terrible cost. He describes a constant round of close encounters with Nazi tanks and anti-tank forces. The story concludes in April 1945 near Bremen. This is a moving and powerful account of the stress and tensions experienced by British tankers in the final year of WWII. Hard cover. 255 pages with Photographs. Maps..
