by Walter E. Lauer. The 99th arrived in Le Havrer France 3 Nov. '44 and made its first attack towards the Roer River and Urft Dams on 13 Dec. '44 against heavy resistance from the West Wall. The Division was attacked, partially surrounded and suffered heavy losses as it retreated at the beginning of the Battle of the Bulge on 16-18 Dec '44. A lone regiment held the Losheimergraben cross roads for 36 hours agains the 6th SS Panzer Army. In Jan '45 it captured the Monschau Forrest, and in March it crossed the Erft River and the Rhine at Remagen. April '45 it assualted the Ruhr Pocket and crossed the Danube River.
