Click to Enlarge2nd ARMORED DIVISION - A HISTORY OF THE SECOND UNITED STATES ARMORED DIVISION 1940 TO 1946. Editor: E.A. Trahan. Official WWII US Army Division History originally published in 1946. Elements of 2nd Armored entered combat in Nov. '42 in North Africa and fought its way through Tunisia. It entered combat as a whole division in July '43 in Sicily and rapidly pushed on to Palermo. The Division landed in Normandy and D-Day+3 on 9 June '44 and was engaged in heavy combat for three months.

In October '44 outside of Uebach and past the Wurm River, the unit suffered extremely heavy tank losses. It fought on, reaching the Roer River in late November '44 where it held defensive positions until the Battle of the Bulge when it was relocated to Belgium 20-22 Dec. '44. The 2nd Armored Division fought the German Ardennes Counteroffensive until it was relieved by the 4th Cavalry Group 19 Jan. '45 for rehabilitation. It reentered combat in late Feb. '45 and crossed the Rhine River 27 March '45 and charged across Germany to the Elbe River south of Magdeburg.
