DANGER FORWARD: THE STORY OF THE FIRST INFANTRY DIVISION IN WORLD WAR II by H.R. Knickerbocker et al. The 1st Infantry Division BIG RED ONE was one of the first combata formations to move overseas in WWII. It entered combat in November 1942 when it invaded North Africa as part of Operation Torch. At the conclusion of that campaign, the Big Red One was retrained for amphibious operations and participated in the invasion of Sicily. After Sicily, the 1st Infantry Division was withdrawn to England to prepare for the invasion of Northwest Europe.
This volume also details its opeations on Omaha Beach on D-Day June 6, 1944. The 1st Division participated in operations in Normandy, France, Belgium, and central Germany.
