THROUGH MY EYES: 91st INFANTRY DIVISION IN ITALY 1942-1945. A personal account of the 91st's inch-by-inch struggle to disgorge the elite Wermacht from their heavily fortified pillboxes in the Apennine mountains.
THROUGH MY EYES: 91st Infantry Division in the Italian Campaign, 1942-1945, by Leon Weckstein. An amazing account by a man who was drafted into the Army at the age of 21 and fought with the 91st Infantry Divisiobn in a tough Italian campaign. Promoted to Staff Sergeant, he hasn't forgotten a single detail about the many times he led his platoon into hell and back. Weckstein was highly regarded for his keen eyesight, and he was often left in forward observation posts to report on enemy movements. In those forward positions, he and his men were highly vulnerable to attack by snipers and artillery. In one poignant day, he was sent forward to investigate whether or not the Germany were using the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa as an observation post, and he was given authority to call in heavy artillery fire to destroy the Tower. Declining to do so, the young staff sergeant literally saved the tower.
His front-row seat allowed him to watch and report with open-mouthed disbelief and nauseating repulsion the shocking casualties our men suffered and the bloody hell our infantry agonized through. Inch-by-inch they struggled to disgorge the elite Wermacht from their heavily fortified pillbox position in the rugged Apennine mountains. The book is fascinating and well written, and it reads much like adventursome fiction. But it is all true. Softcover, 193 pages, with drawings.
