USS LOS ANGELES (CA-135): COLD WAR SENTINEL. Heavy Cruiser in post-WWII China, the Korean War and the Cold War until 1963.
USS LOS ANGELES CA-135: COLD WAR SENTINEL by Harvey Beigel. The Heavy Cruiser was commissioned 22 July 1945 and arrived for service with the 7th Fleet off Shanghai, China 3 January 1946 and became a floating fortress to maintain control of the navigable portions of the Yangtze River and the coastal areas during turmoil of post-war China while supporting the growing anti-Communist movements. Decommissioned 9 April 1948, she was called back to active duty for the Korean War where it provided accurate and deadly bombardments which helped turned the tide of many land battles, dueled with communist shore batteries, participated in numerous siege operations including Wonsan Harbor, destroyed railroads and bridges, and had gun fights with fortified cave gun positions. The USS Los Angeles continued an active roll in the maintaining the peace in the Pacific until its retirement in 1963. Soft cover 11x8.5 inches. Well illustrated. -- Navy Ship
