They gained undying fame with their drop into Normandy on the eve of D-Day. By the time the All American Division was withdrawn from Normandy, it sustained nearly 50% casualties.
Later actions included Market Garden when it was dropped into Nijmegen during the thrust towards Arnhem. It fought in the Battle of the Bulge involved in the desperate fighting in the Ardennes, and the final Allied advance into Germany, where the 82nd was chosen to occupy especially important positions. The division would end he war occupying Berlin and Frankfurt.
