WAR IN THE AIR 1914-45, by Williamson Murray. General editor John Keegan. From the Cassell History of Warfare series.
As with other books in the Cassell series, this book is an excellent military history book. Although brief (240 pages), it covers all military aviation developments from 1914 to 1945. The first aircraft flew in 1903 and within 10 years had been developed into military weapons. During the First World War, tghe aeroplane evolved from a reconnaissance platform of dubious reliability to an integral part of the military machine. In addition to their intervention on and above the battlefield, aircraft developed a strategic capability that was predicted to become so powerful that land armies would be obsolete. Such extreme pre-war theories were put to the test in the Second World War and proved wanting. However, in 1945 aircraft did indeed achieve total dominance with the atomic bomb on Japan, and a new era of warfare had begun.
Includes a detailed chronology, many photos, battle action maps. First published in 1999.
