THE AMERICAN CAVALRY IN VIETNAM -- 'The FIRST CAV'. Captures the spirit and the courage of the American fighting man in a fast moving narrative, including some of the War's most intense battles from 1965 through 1972.

Click to EnlargeTHE AMERICAN CAVALRY IN VIETNAM -- "The First Cav" Division. The American Cavalry in Vietnam tells the story of the American 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) in Vietnam from its arrival in Vietnam in September of 1965 until the departure of its 3rd Brigade in June of 1972. In this period the 'First Team' fought some of the most intense battles of the Vietnam War and suffered 5,444 KIA and 26,592 WIA.

François de Chaunac, a French author who possible sees more clearly than many Americans of the war generation, captures the spirit and the courage of the American fighting man in a fast moving narrative.

The author lived and worked in Vietnam during the war. He writes from personal observation as well as extensive and careful research. The book was originally published in France and found a friendly audience. The French to English translator was a young officer who served in the Garry Owen Brigade at the time of some of the events described in this book. For good measure, the author gives excellent explanations of the tactics and techniques developed by the Division in preparation for taking the war to the enemy through the air as well as on the ground.

This is a book by a very perceptive French author who comes just about as close as you can get to capturing the fighting spirit, dedication, and brotherhood of the men of the First Air Cavalry Division. Those who did not serve can never know. Those who avoided service should know shame. He writes without bias and provides a superb historical perspective on the First Cav at war in Vietnam
