THE WAR THAT WOULD NOT END. Most U.S. MARINES were withdrawn from Vietnam when North Vietnam launched a full scale invasion across the DMZ. The ARVN troops were unable to stop them but the US Marines held fast.

Click to EnlargeTHE WAR THAT WOULD NOT END: US Marines in Vietnam, 1971-1973, by MAJ Charles D. Melson USMC (Ret). With hopes for the success of "Vietnamization" of the war, USMC forces were mostly withdrawn from Vietnam until in 1971, there were actually less than 500 marines remaining. But in 1972, North Vietnam launched a full scale invasion which necessitated a rapid buildup of the the Third Marine Amphibious Force.

This book paints a vivid picture of the battle for control of northern I Corps, concentrating on the Marines and their fight to stem the tide of invaders. It is not just a war story, during a time when America was desparately trying to leave all it knew of Vietnam behind, but an account of a high drama punctuated by sharp analysis.
