THE ROUGH RIDERS. by Theodore Roosevelt. Originally published in 1902. Spanish-American War. Theodore Roosevelt resigned his post as Assistant-Secretary of the Navy to join the Army to form a regiment in the territories of Arizona, New Mexico and Oklahoma. The Rough Riders were a most unusual regiment. Informal, independent, made of ex-cowboys, Western bad men, and Ivy League graduates, Roosevelt's troops made a poor impression on the Army but provided excellent copy for the nation's newspapers during its heroic exploits in Cuba. Based on Roosevelt's daily records of his thoughts and experiences. 298 pages. Superb photographs.
