MARINE TANK BATTLES IN THE PACIFIC. A gripping narrative combines exhaustive detail on Marine armor and combat with moving eyewitness accounts, and what it was actually like to be a Marine tanker in action in the Pacific.
MARINE TANK BATTLES IN THE PACIFIC by Oscar Gilbert. No previous book has been devoted to Marine Corps armor in World War II. In the decades since World War II, accounts of the battles of the United States Marine Corps in the South Pacific had gradually eliminated mention of the tank as a main battle weapon of the Marines. This book sets the story straight. The Marines prior to WWII had developed the concept that armored vehicles would be crucial to any war in jungle areas. Although some major mistakes were made by the Marines with their tanks early in the war, they learned from their mistakes and eventually crushed fierce Japanese resistance.
Today attached armored units are an integral pat of Marine units; but no previous book has been written solely on the Marines use of tanks in the South Pacific. This author has researched his subject well. His writing is colorful and informative. This is an excellent military history book. 356 pages. Complete bibliography. Fully footnoted. Many never before published b/w photos.
