GOLDEN STATE BATTLEWAGON: USS California (BB-44). The battleship was badly damaged at Pearl Harbor, but she was repaired and able to resume the war by 1944 at the invasion of Saipan. -- Navy Ship
GOLDEN STATE BATTLEWAGON: USS California (BB-44).
Launched in 1920 at Mare Island Naval Shipyard, the California was almost identical to her sister ships of the New Mexico Battleship Class. At 21.6 knots, she was fast for her day, but her long graceful lines and clipper bow gave her the speedy appearance of an ocean-going greyhound. This book is a pictorial history, full of interesting photos of the California and well-seasoned with narratives. A full color 22-inch centerfold shows her appearance prior to and during WWII. "The Prune Barge," as she was affectionately known, was badly damaged at Pearl Harbor, but she was repaired and able to resume the war by 1944 at the invasion of Saipan. This excellent book will complement the collection of naval history students and modelers alike. Softcover, 44 pages, with many great photos.
