ENEMY ON ISLAND. ISSUE IN DOUBT: The Capture of Wake Island, December, 1941, by Stan Cohen.
This 105-page magazine-format book, now in its seventh printing, is the finest history available on the 1941 Battle for Wake Island. For the US, Wake Island stikes some major contrasts: Wake was the scene of the first sinking of major Japanese ships by US Navy forces; Wake (and Guam) were the scenes of the first USMC defeats since October 1846; Wake was the war's first surrender of military and civilian personnel; and the first USMC Airman ever to be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor fought on Wake Island. This is an important book. The narrative clearly explains the progress of the battle, and the excellent photos and drawings add tremendous graphic details.
