STEADY NERVES AND STOUT HEARTS: The USS Enterprise (CV-6) Air Group and Pearl Harbor, 7 December 1941 -- Navy Scouting Squadron VS-2 -- Navy Aircraft
All students of Navy history know that Japanese warplanes headed for Pearl Harbor on the morning of 7 Dec 41. Many are unaware that 17 SBD-2 aircraft from Scouting Squadron VS-2 were launched from the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CV-6) at the same time the Japanese planes were launched. The 17 Navy aircraft arrived over the Hawaiian Islands just as the Japanese began their attacks on the anchored Fleet. When the Navy pilots spotted the Japanese planes from a distance, they mistook them for US Army Air Corps planes on some kind of training mission. When bullets began to fly and dogfights began, the truth was quickly known, and 33 American pilots and radiomen/gunners found themselves engulfed in a war they had not expected to find that morning. This book is extremely well researched, using official records and interviews with the participants. Until this book was printed (1989), no books had documented this early event of WWII. Softcover, with excellent photos and diagrams. 72 pages.
