SEABEEs, THE NAVY'S FIGHTING CONSTRUCTION MEN. This summary of Seabee activity targets the training and worldwide operations of various construction units. While European operations are mentioned briefly, the majority of the film deals with airfield and port work in the remote islands of the Pacific. Alaskan work is also featured. Included is an introduction by founder Admiral Morrell.
NORTHERN HIGHWAYS TO TOKYO. This excellent account of Seabee's work in the islands off Alaska will bring back memories of the harshest realities of combat construction.
Seabee's Report, European Operations. This film covers the introduction of construction units into the United Kingdom and subsequent deployment into North Africa and Italy. It is heavy on beach operations Sicily and Salerno with many action scenes. Also shown are the little known Seabee efforts during the Normandy invasion.
Seabees in Normandy. Covers primarily harbor and port repair.
These are films made in the 40's, primarily to inform the American public about the contributions to the war effort by the Navy's Seabees (Construction Battalions). Viewed today, they offer historical perspectives rarely seen elsewhere in film. "Northern Highways" chronicles the SeaBees in the Aleutians. "European Operations" records their work in England, North Africa, and Sicily. Despite the wear marks on the film, this is an exceptional video worth owning.
